The structure of five paragraph essays becomes evident from the title. No one will pass by this type of writing. A five paragraph essay is a simplified explanation of a more sophisticated academic paper – argumentative, persuasive, narrative etc.

A five paragraph essay consists of three main parts. These parts are the Introduction, the Main Boy and Conclusion. Once you get an idea of how to bring them together into a logical, clear and smooth text, you will experience less problems with writing other papers.

Here is what five paragraph essays should have:

  1. Introduction. As any lead into a topic, Introduction in a five paragraph essay has to introduce the main idea. The most important requisite here is the thesis statement. It is a sentence or two that represent the very essence of the five paragraph essay. Usually they are the answer to the question that is hidden in the topic. Once you learn to write thesis statements in five paragraph essays, you will easily handle leads in bigger pieces of writing.
  2. Main Body. One part, but three paragraphs – this is so nice about a five paragraph essay. You will need to remember several basic characteristics that will be applicable to the biggest part of the text. Here they are: every single paragraph has to have only one main idea; idea has to be backed up by two or three strong arguments; transitions between paragraphs in a five paragraph essay have to be smooth.
  3. Conclusion. In a five paragraph essay it is your summary of the written information. Do not repeat what has already been said. Simply restate and draw conclusions.
