Appraisal report writing is a widespread assignment due to the special value that the instructors attribute to it. The matter is that appraisal report writing is dually beneficial for you. First of all, when evaluating somebody else’s paper, you recollect everything you know about writing and apply this in practice. And secondly, you develop your writing skills when explaining why you think a particular mistake is a mistake.
How to succeed in appraisal report writing
Appraisal report writing should be done in several stages. To succeed in this type of assignment, you should perceive appraisal report writing not as an assignment as such, but as your work. In other words, imagine that you are an instructor and go through the following stages:
- Read the work you are to evaluate attentively. Appraisal report writing requires you to present a short description of what you are evaluating.
- Check the rules according to which the work should be evaluated. Study carefully such aspects as requirements regarding language, citation style, type of assignment (essay, research paper, etc), and the like characteristics.
- Read the paper once again.
- Find the parts of the work that do not correspond to the rules, if any. At this stage, you should also check the paper for grammatical and stylistic mistakes.
- Group the aspects you have comments on. For instance, you can state that a paper has repeated grammatical mistakes, some inconsistency with the given citation style rules, and structural problems (if this is true). After this, your appraisal report writing will consist in presenting these three groups, explaining the mistakes found, and giving recommendations on correcting them.
