Articles on Writing: Learn to Distinguish the Good Ones
It is hard to find on the internet a good article on writing essays. This statement is hard to believe, considering the amount of the results, related to essay writing, which Google returns. With such amount of articles, it is hard to understand what constitutes a good article on writing. This article presents a few criteria that will help identifying a good article on writing.
What Constitutes an Article on Writing?
An article on writing is any article that has an educational purpose of developing writing skills and outlining essential steps, elements, and definitions that should be known by students. Although there is no definite academic level for articles on writing, commonly, the potential audience of such articles is high school and college students. Usually, articles on writing take the form of simple guides, how-to-do manuals, and lists of steps on writing.
Criteria of Good Articles on Writing
The following criteria can be helpful in identifying a good article on writing:
- The article contains references to books or scholarly works on writing.
- The article does not generalize writing, keeping focus on a single aspect, e.g. narrative writing, developing arguments, citing resources, etc.
- The article does not present personal opinions as statements to follow. A good article on writing presents information from the position of a tutor, rather than a student. Although, many good articles are written by students, they do not represent an opinion.
- The article provides good examples that will differentiate subjective descriptions. For example, a good article, when referring to clear and vague thesis statements, will provide an example for both.
- A good article on writing will never present itself as the ultimate guide to excel in writing, as there is no ultimate guide of such kind. The only guaranteed step to excel in writing is through constant practice.
